The Kansas State Historical Society (KSHS or KHS) was formally organized on 13 December 1875, though previous attempts had been made to found such a society. The Kansas Editors' and Publishers' Association were the driving force for this latest version, and the committee created to form the society appointed Franklin G. Adams as its secretary. The first House of Representatives in the Kansas Legislature consisted of 75 members who were chosen for one year, and the first Senate consisted of 25 members who were chosen for two years. An amendment to the state constitution in 1873 raised the number of Representatives to 125 and the number of Senators to 40.
